This DVD contains all of Raoul Servais' short films plus Rudy Pinceel's documentary 'SERVAIS'.

This most recent edition of CINEMATEK includes 14 short films by Raoul Servais, better known as the Magician of Ostend. Servais enjoys an international reputation as a pioneer of animation film in Belgium, founder of the first animation film school in Europe and as the first Belgian Golden Palm winner in Cannes for an animation film. His oeuvre is characterised by a ceaseless search for new forms and techniques. In a new documentary, Rudy Pinceel sketches a poetic portrait of Raoul Servais and follows him for three years, until the opening of a permanent museum room in Mu.ZEE (Ostend), dedicated to his oeuvre.

SERVAIS (2018)

The documentary SERVAIS tells the story of living film legend Raoul Servais on his way to his appointment with history. At the end of June 2018, at the age of 90, the pioneer of the Belgian animation film was given two exhibition rooms in the Ostend Art museum at the seaside, Mu.ZEE, alongside artists James Ensor and Leon Spilliaert. From October 2015, the film follows the daily life of the internationally acclaimed animation filmmaker, who continues to push his own boundaries with infectious energy. SERVAIS is not an archive film. It is a fascinating portrait of an elderly artist who continues to challenge himself with youthful flexibility and inspires others beyond measure.
